Americans Divided on Placing Reagan’s Portrait on $50 Bill

While 60 per cent of Republicans favor the proposal, just 33 per cent of Democrats concur.

A recent proposal to print $50 bills with the portrait of former president Ronald Reagan has divided views in the United States, a new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll has found.

In the online survey of a representative national sample of 1,007 American adults, 41 per cent of respondents support the initiative from Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to place Reagan’s face on the $50 bill, while 39 per cent oppose the plan.

The division is clear all across the country, but there is a slight gender gap. Women are more likely to come out in favor of the proposal (39% support it, 35% oppose it) whereas men are almost evenly divided (44% support it, 42% oppose it).

The level of “strong opposition” to this idea stands at 26 per cent nationally, while the level of “strong support” is 15 per cent.

Three-in-five Republicans (60%) support McHenry’s bill, but only 43 per cent of Independents and 33 per cent of Democrats concur. The level of strong opposition from Democrats (30%) is almost equal to the level of strong support from Republicans (30%).

    Sir:
I come down STRONGLY against putting Mr Reagan’s face on ANY bill. While a Great relief after Mr Carter, when viewed against Mr Franklin he disappears into obscurity. After all, it does not take very much to outshine Mr Carter in any arena you wish to view him.
Regarding the absolutely ridiculous claim that he defeated the Soviet Union or brought down the Berlin Wall, just political hot air.

I agree that they should put President Reagans picture on the bill. He was a great President. He believed in the very foundation that made this the greatest country, in over 200 years. Everyone working and contributing. Not just taking and doing nothing in return. I disagree with the person below.

I have nothing against putting Reagans mug on our currency, but I think the 50 dollar bill is a little extravagant. As a member of the working class during Reagans terms in office and being one who recieved the last drop of the trickle down, I believe it to be more appropiate to put the Great Communicator on the penny. Well maybe a nickle, but that’s the limit.

Former President Reagan deserves that honor. He was an excellent man and President, too
bad we can’t get him back in the White House.

I am conservative and generally consider myself Republican, so it’s not too surprising that I “somewhat approved” (or however the response was worded that indicated moderate approval) to placing Ronald Reagan on the $50 bill. However, the more I considered this question, the angrier I became. It isn’t that I’m against honoring Ronald Reagan in this way. I really don’t care either way. But in the face of the healthcare debacle, our overwhelming foreign debt, and two wars you’re telling me these idiots in Washington, D.C. can’t find anything else to talk about but whose face is on our money–let alone on a bill that most people only see when they are working behind a cash register making change!!! And the members of Congress wonder why the American people think they are out of touch and that ALL OF THEM need to be removed from office!!!

While I loved Reagan, he had his faults as do just
about ALL of our past and current President. He is
without a doubt, my favorite President of RECENT
history. But that’s my issue. He was too recent. I
think any President, no matter how great, should not
grace ANY currency for SEVERAL decades, until after the
FULL impact of their Presidency is FULLY known. That
being said, I’d LOVE to see his wonderful face added to
Mount Rushmore. And if the U.S. Mint ever creates a
NEGATIVE Million dollar bill, put Obama’s arrogant mug
on THAT piece of toilet paper.

As long as it is real money I dont care. I hope counterfeiters
will use congressional members on the one they print.

I fully support placing Ronald Reagan’s picture on the new $50 bills. He was an excellent President. Unfortunately, there has not been a President to equal him since. President Reagan deserves this honor.
