The Salvation Army has recently released "Perceptions of Poverty", a report that seeks to raise awareness of an issue that is currently affecting one-in-six Americans. The report incorporates the findings of a survey of 1,004 American adults, conducted earlier this year on Vision Critical's Springboard America panel.
The results show that Americans can be sympathetic to their neighbors in need, while at the same time misunderstanding their needs. While 88 per cent of Americans agree with the notion that people in poverty deserve a helping hand, half (49%) believe that a good work ethic is all a person needs to escape poverty.
The survey also shows that practically two-in-five Americans (38%) have received support from a charitable group, including food from food banks or financial assistance/housing support.
"We’re delighted to help draw attention to a problem that afflicts 50 million Americans and yet is, as our report shows, often misunderstood," said Vision Critical Chief Research Officer Andrew Grenville, who conducted the study. "We’re thrilled and proud to be working alongside the Salvation Army on this report. They are absolutely committed to helping to eradicate poverty and do the most good."
