Vision Critical CRO Studies the Growth of Surveillance

Andrew Grenville, Chief Research Officer at global research and technology firm Vision Critical, has collaborated on the first book that provides a comprehensive analysis of public opinion on the growth of surveillance in the 21st Century.

The book, titled “Surveillance, Privacy, And The Globalization Of Personal Information” and published by McGill-Queen’s University Press, outlines the expansion in surveillance that followed the 9/11 terrorist attacks and looks at how people in different countries are reacting to these changes.

Grenville’s chapter—Shunning Surveillance or Welcoming the Watcher? Exploring How People Traverse the Path of Resistance—provides a thorough analysis of a comparative survey conducted in seven countries: Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, Mexico, Spain and the United States.

The survey measured four concepts: knowledge of surveillance, awareness of the experience of being monitored or invaded, trust in monitors, and control over one’s data. A subsequent segmentation divided respondents into three key groups: informed resisters, the status quo satisfied, and alienated skeptics.

“The research shows that there is a dire need to increase people’s level of understanding of surveillance technology and how it is used,” said Grenville. “There is tremendous potential for exploitation and alienation.”

Over the course of a career spanning two decades, Grenville has spearheaded research efforts that have looked at issues such as religion, crime and health. He is also a member of The Salvation Army’s National Advisory Board.
