5 Tips to Engage

1. Customize the look, feel and messaging.

Customize the look, feel and messaging. We customize all of the creative design and messaging for our communities.

2. Create a culture.

Create a culture. Invite the right mix of people, establish rituals (eg: deployment days, guest moderators), set a conversational tone that fits with the brand, encourage good behavior and responses with daily moderation and facilitation, and most importantly share back insights and what you’re doing with the insights.

3. Solve real problems.

Solve real problems. Tasks that involve solving real problems, but are also fun and involve varied activities make members feel they are respected as true advisors and are making a contribution. Part of this process is actually sharing what your real business challenge is with members.

4. Fulfill social needs of members.

Fulfill social needs of members. Enable members to express their identity, give and get help, share ideas, develop affiliations and reputation, and build a sense of community with others. These are intrinsic incentives for participating.

5. Incent extrinsically when necessary.

Incent extrinsically when necessary. Some communities do not require and actually abhor extrinsic (financial incentives), while others look at it as a requirement for participating. Understanding when and when not to incent is critical to the success of the community. We typically recommend a participation incentive or sweepstakes for communities requiring financial incentives.

“When we had the demo, our reaction was ‘Wow! You can do all of this.’ And once we started using Vision Critical, it was really good. I enjoyed it. The questionnaire design module is attractive and easy to use. Vision Critical defined templates so that the panel members’ portal and the surveys have a consistent look and feel, reflecting the BusinessWeek design ethos."
