Convenience Remains King for Video Streaming, but for How Long?

In light of the recent Emmys and huge popularity of “House of Cards,” Vision Critical decided to take a look at what’s driving Americans to stream video as opposed to watching shows on TV. While “House of Cards” and “Arrested Development” may not have been this year’s Emmy darlings, the rise of Nexflix original shows accessible through online streaming has been quickly growing and a trend we believe traditional TV needs to catch up to fast. In looking at more than 1,000 Americans, we found that when it comes to video streaming, convenience beats any other factor in driving traffic. However, original programming is quickly catching up and we believe will soon take over similar to how HBO original shows like “Boardwalk Empire” and “Game of Thrones” helped keep the network in the game. Today, 46 percent of Americans pay for a streaming service, with Netflix being the most popular, especially amongst Millenials.
