Social Media Changing the Relationship Between Civic Officials and Citizens
For years, whenever Smithers Councillor Bill Goodacre wants to know what’s the hot topic on people’s minds, he makes the rounds of his little Interior town’s coffee shops.
He doesn’t have a Twitter account, and he rarely signs on to his Facebook account. When he really wants to know what’s going on online, he turns to Mayor Taylor Bachrach, who has 1,000 followers on his Facebook page.
But on Wednesday, Goodacre, a former NDP MLA, admitted that as good as his jungle telegraph is in Smithers, population 5,400, voters are also wanting to communicate in other ways.
